2020 New Mahindra Thar Looks Bigger when it comes to size and will have a plush interior and meet all safety and emission norms
Mahindra is readying next generation Thar for Indian market launch and for the first time, the test mule was spotted outside the Chennai. New Thar is underdevelopment for quite some time and the spy shots reveal that the new model will be larger and wider than before. It will be underpinned by a new ladder-on-frame chassis which has been jointly developed by Mahindra and Ssangyong. The new frame allows the Thar to have a significantly wide track and elongated wheelbase for spacious cabin experience.
In terms of looks, Mahindra has retained the significant design elements of Thar in the interest of retaining its strong brand image. That said, new model does get its own share of changes such as long wheelbase, dummy lights, wide wheel arches, and canopy seen on the test model.
The most significant change, however, will happen under the bonnet where the new BS-VI complaint engine will make its way, thereby replacing the 2.5-liter CRDe (107PS/247Nm) and DI (63PS/195Nm) engines making motive force in current models. Both of these current motors are unlikely to meet the new emission norms and hence, require a replacement on the new model.
Mahindra introduced Thar in the Indian market in 2010 and gave it a mid-life facelift in 2015. Currently, the SUV is in its last legs of lifecycle and will be replaced by a new model in 2020. Unlike the current-generation, the new Thar will be much safer and come with quality interiors. Expect the Mahindra to equip the 2020 Thar with a host of safety features like airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System, along with hill-hold assist, BorgWarner locking differential with high and low reduction gear etc. Just so you know, India is going to get its first vehicle safety norms, called Bharat new vehicle assessment program from April 1, 2020.
