2023 H1 Luxury Car Sales Promise Strong Growth For Every Brand!

BMW Group India has posted its best-ever half-year, quarter and June in 2023 – for all three brands – BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad. In the first six months, 5,867 cars (BMW and MINI) and 4,667 motorcycles (BMW Motorrad) have been sold. BMW sold 5,476 units and MINI 391 units.

BMW Group India continues its dominance in electric luxury segment thanks to the most diverse electric portfolio – BMW i7, BMW iX, BMW i4 and MINI SE. BMW Group India delivered eleven times more electric vehicles during January – June 2023 than in the same period in 2022. The BMW iX is the best-selling battery electric vehicle in Indian luxury car segment. The best charging infrastructure in premium segment at BMW Group Dealer Network in 35 cities played a vital role.

BMW achieved best-ever sales of 5,476 units (+5%). BMW Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) contributed over 50% to sales volumes. The newly introduced BMW X1 stormed the segment with highest-ever bookings since its launch. As the highest-selling BMW model, it contributed over 20% to sales. With robust appearance and functional versatility, it embodies both the freedom of day-to-day city driving as well sheer driving pleasure. This makes it the most sought after SAV especially among young customers enjoying an active lifestyle. The order pipeline of the BMW X1 for next few months is very strong. The launch of the new BMW X5 will further strengthen the SAV sales momentum. The newly launched BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine was the best-selling sedan with a share of nearly 20% in sales.

02 MINI Charged Edition

Sales of BMW Luxury Class, that includes the BMW 7 Series, BMW i7, BMW X7 and XM, have more than doubled (+128%). The demand for BMW i7 has been exceptionally good underpinning its position as the pinnacle of luxury. Due to high number of orders, the BMW 7 Series, BMW i7 and BMW X7 currently have a waiting period of 4 months.

MINI impressed with deliveries of 391 units (+3%). The locally produced MINI Countryman dominated with a share of 63% and the iconic MINI Hatch 20%. The all-electric MINI 3-Door Cooper SE has become the third-highest selling MINI model in India with a share of 14% in sales.

BMW Motorrad rode ahead with 4,667 units (+50%). Leading the sales volumes for BMW Motorrad were ‘Made in India’ BMW G 310 R, BMW G 310 RR and BMW G 310 GS with a combined share of nearly 90%. Other popular models were BMW S 1000 RR, BMW R 1250 GS / GSA and BMW C 400 GT scooter. BMW Financial Services India played an instrumental role by providing customised and flexible financial solutions which are significantly valuable to premium clientele of BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad.

Volvo Car India’s luxury EV the XC 40 Recharge captured 25% of the market share in the luxury EV segment. According to data available on the Government of India’s Vahan portal, the XC40 Recharge sold 241 units in the period January-June 2023 which corresponds to 25% of the luxury EV segment. Volvo’s XC 40 Recharge was launched in July 2022 with deliveries commencing in November 2022. 365 Volvo XC40 Recharge has been delivered since deliveries started in Nov 2022. The XC40 Recharge is India’s first locally assembled luxury electric SUV.

Customers also get a 3 years comprehensive car warranty, 3 years Volvo service package, 3 year RSA, 8 years battery warranty, digital service subscription of 4 years and an 11 Kw wall box charger. The customers of XC40 Recharge also get the exclusive membership to the company’s ultimate luxury program called ‘Tre Kronor Experience’.

XC40 Recharge pure electric is powered by a twin-motor. The SUV delivers a power output of 408 bhp and 660Nm of peak torque. The electric motors are powered by a 78 kWh battery pack giving a range of up to 418kms on a single charge, as per international test conditions (WLTP). It can go from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.9 seconds. The battery can be recharged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in around 28 minutes using a fast charger (150KW).

With the introduction of the Volvo C40 Recharge, Volvo Car India further consolidates its position as a leading force in the luxury electric vehicle market. Introduction of C40 Recharge is in line with company commitment to have 100 percent electrified vehicles in the portfolio by 2030.

Mercedes-Benz achieves best ever H1 in India!

H1 2023 sales highlights:

⦁ The LWB E-Class remained the single highest selling model for Mercedes-Benz India
⦁ GLE becomes the highest selling SUV for Mercedes-Benz India followed by the GLA SUV in H1 2023
⦁ The New C-Class continues its strong market demand, contributing significant volumes

Audi India sales grow 97% in H1 2023

· Strong performance: 3,474 new cars delivered compared to 1,765 units in the same period last year
· Audi Approved: plus witnessed 53% growth compared to the same period last year
· Industry first initiative for EV owners: ‘Charge my Audi’ on the ‘myAudiConnect’ app with 750+ chargers
· Audi Club Rewards program: 20k+ customers on the application in less than a year

· New electric car launch: Audi Q8 e-tron in the second half of the year


JLR India reported its best ever Q1 sales performance with a growth of 102%, retailing a total of 1048 units, in the first quarter of FY24 compared to the same period last year. This performance was enabled by a phenomenal growth of 209% in Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender sales. The three models continue to see sustained demand, contributing 78% of the current order book. JLR couldn’t

With the successful launch of the New Range Rover and New Range Rover Sport in the second half of FY23, and the overwhelming response to the Defender, the order book for Q1 FY24 grew by 88% as compared to the same period last year. The current order book covers for more than six months of sales and is witnessing a consistent increase month-on-month.
JLR certified pre-owned business grew by 137% in the first quarter of FY24, again, reflecting the growing demand and the equity of JLR brands in India.
The company has an impressive line-up of product initiatives scheduled for the year, starting with the highly anticipated release of the enhanced Range Rover Velar – bookings for which have recently commenced. JLR recently announced its new corporate identity and its House of Brands approach to bring to the fore the unique DNA of each of JLR’s brands – Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar – as well as to accelerate delivery of the company’s vision.

Overall, JLR couldn’t provide H1 sales number. Volvo continues with a strong momentum since the last five years. BMW makes a big leap meanwhile Audi isn’t far behind when it comes BMW India car sales. Mercedes continues to take a strong lead but competitors seem to be catching up faster. BMW has a lot of promise to deliver as its volume products launched recently can take it much higher which is already expects, just like Mercedes Benz India does too.
