Maruti Suzuki is preparing an update for its popular WagonR hatchback, as evidenced by recent spy photographs capturing a heavily camouflaged test mule undergoing road tests in India. The key highlight of the upcoming facelift is expected to be the adoption of Maruti Suzuki’s new 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z-Series (Z12E) petrol engine, which is gradually replacing the existing 1.2-litre, four-cylinder K-Series (K12) unit across the automaker’s portfolio.

The transition to the three-cylinder Z-Series engine aligns with Maruti Suzuki’s focus on maximizing fuel economy and reducing emissions. The new Z12E engine features a high-compression design intended to improve overall efficiency, achieving up to 40% thermal efficiency while minimizing internal friction and mechanical losses. Following the deployment of this engine in other models such as the updated Baleno, the powertrain is now slated for integration into the WagonR lineup.

Based on the spied prototype, the updated hatchback retains its characteristic tallboy stance, front headlamp layout, vertical taillamps, and rear windscreen design. The test mule appears to represent a mid-tier variant, equipped with standard steel wheels and repositioned turn indicators. While minor cosmetic revisions and additional interior features are anticipated, the overall silhouette and structural layout remain consistent with the current model.

Currently priced between ₹4.99 lakh and ₹7.24 lakh (ex-showroom), the Maruti WagonR is offered across four primary trims: LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi+. The current iteration includes a flex-fuel compliant K12N engine featuring upgraded fuel pumps, injectors, a recalibrated ECU, and an ethanol sensor. The upcoming Z-Series integration is expected to build upon these efficiency gains while maintaining the hatchback’s practical positioning in the market.
