The New Car Assessment Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean, known as Latin NCAP, has announced the results of its fourth crash tests for 2025, awarding the newly launched Volkswagen Tera a commendable five-star rating. The car is set to come to India.
Manufactured in Brazil, the Volkswagen Tera impressively secured five stars, showcasing a range of safety features. Equipped with six airbags and standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), as well as optional Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), the Tera scored 89.88% in Adult Occupant protection, 87.25% for Child Occupant safety, 75.77% in Pedestrian Protection and Vulnerable Road Users, and 84.76% in Safety Assist measures.
The assessment involved several critical tests, including frontal impact, side impact, side pole impact, whiplash evaluation, and various pedestrian protection scenarios. The vehicle also underwent testing for features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) for Vulnerable Road Users, AEB City, AEB Interurban, Speed Assist System (SAS), Lane Support Systems (LSS), and Blind Spot Detection (BSD). While AEB comes standard in most markets, in Argentina, it’s included only in the top trim, with others having it as an optional feature.
Overall, the Tera demonstrated solid performance with a stable structure and footwell areas. However, improvements could be made in protecting the driver’s chest during frontal impacts. The dynamic tests for child protection yielded average to good results, indicating room for enhancement. Pedestrian protection, especially for the upper leg, also requires attention. Notably, AEB demonstrated reliable effectiveness across various scenarios, aligning with Latin NCAP’s availability criteria and nearly achieving a full score. The SAS met the technical standards and is standard equipment, while the optional BSD and LSS showed promising results but did not score due to insufficient availability.
Latin NCAP emphasizes the importance of basic passive safety features and strongly advises purchasing versions equipped with highly rated ADAS technologies, such as AEB, for enhanced safety.
