An exciting glimpse of the upcoming compact electric SUV from Mercedes-Benz, affectionately dubbed the “Baby G-Class.” This new model is designed to be a more compact yet faithful take on the iconic G-Wagen. In its prototype form, it’s described as resembling the larger G-Class as though it had been shrunk in the wash, now about “15 percent smaller” but still exuding that distinctive boxy and robust character.
The design pays tribute to its big brother, boasting the signature vertical windshield, straight sides, and a sharply defined roofline. To emphasize its classic off-road heritage, the prototype even features a rear-mounted spare wheel.
Importantly, the Baby G-Class is set to make its debut as an all-electric vehicle (EV), as indicated by the prototype’s sealed grille. However, the most exciting aspect lies beneath the surface. It will be built on a newly designed, smaller custom chassis that integrates elements of a traditional ladder frame. This choice is somewhat unconventional for a modern EV and highlights Mercedes-Benz’s ambition for this compact SUV to deliver genuine off-road performance, rather than just a tough exterior.
Anticipated to launch around 2027, the Baby G-Class will directly compete with the Land Rover “mini-Defender,” promising an intriguing showdown in the premium compact heritage off-roader market.
