BMW is currently developing a redesigned version of the iX1, which is set to adopt the brand’s new “Neue Klasse” design language. Recent spy shots reveal that the brand’s smallest electric SUV is moving toward a cleaner, more minimalist aesthetic, taking significant visual inspiration from the larger iX3. The most notable exterior change is the departure from the large kidney grilles of the outgoing model in favor of smaller, vertical units, a look that is also expected to appear on the upcoming redesigned X5.

Beyond the grille, the new iX1 features updated headlights, a redesigned bumper, and flush-mounted door handles that contribute to its streamlined side profile. While camouflage still hides many details, the rear of the vehicle will include new LED taillights. These changes are part of a broader effort to align the iX1 with BMW’s next generation of electric vehicles, which aim to compete more effectively against the growing wave of electric SUVs from Chinese manufacturers.

Technically, the iX1 is expected to benefit from BMW’s sixth-generation battery and motor technology. While it may not feature the same large battery pack as the iX3 due to its size, there is speculation that it could share an 800-volt electrical architecture. This upgrade would allow for significantly faster charging speeds, potentially reaching up to 400 kW. Initial production is expected to focus on single-motor variants before dual-motor all-wheel-drive models are introduced. Two wheel drive variants will be RWD because BMW Neue Klasse iX1 platform is only meant for RWD and AWD!

The interior of the new iX1 will mirror the cabin layout seen in the upcoming iX3 and i3 sedan. This includes the implementation of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive system, characterized by a tilted central infotainment display and a unique four-spoke steering wheel. By combining this high-tech interior with improved range and faster charging, BMW positions the redesigned iX1 as a pivotal model in its goal to expand its footprint in the global EV market.
