India’s most anticipated sports utility vehicle (SUV), Mahindra’s Thar, is gearing up for its electric debut. The all-electric version, known as Thar.e, marks a pivotal move in Mahindra’s journey towards battery electric vehicles (BEV), seamlessly combining zero-emission technology with robust off-road capabilities.

As per various reports, the launch is slated for August 2026, with pricing expected to fall between ₹20 to ₹25 lakhs. While the design promises to be groundbreaking, it is likely to maintain a more conventional aesthetic compared to Mahindra’s other electric offerings like the XEV and BE series.

The Thar.e will feature a bold, boxy design and an electric dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout, ensuring it retains its legendary off-road prowess.

With high ground clearance, the Thar.e aka Mahindra ZEV will be built on the dedicated INGLO-P1 platform, which is engineered specifically for electric vehicles. This “born electric” platform utilizes high-strength Boron steel, enhancing its ruggedness compared to the current Thar, and provides improved approach and departure angles for better off-road performance.

In terms of design enhancements, the bonnet is expected to be slightly smaller for better visibility on the road. The interior will receive a complete makeover, showcasing a larger infotainment cluster complemented by a substantial touchscreen interface. Moreover, the headlights are reported to feature a distinctive square shape.

While the battery specifications have yet to be officially announced, it is anticipated to range from 60kWh to 80kWh, ensuring a commendable driving range. Unlike the ICE variant that has three doors, the Thar.e is projected to have five doors, mirroring the practicality found in the Roxx version of the current Thar.

In addition to these features, the Thar.e is expected to be equipped with advanced technologies, including cell-to-pack battery technology, 5G connectivity, and over-the-air (OTA) updates for a cutting-edge driving experience.
