The Government of India has introduced an excise duty exemption for petrol blended with higher concentrations of ethanol, specifically E22, E25, E27, and E30. This policy follows the formalization of quality specifications for these blends by the Bureau of Indian Standards in May 2026. By removing this tax burden, the government aims to improve the future commercial viability of these fuels, ultimately seeking to reduce reliance on imported crude oil and increase the utilization of domestic biofuels.

While the tax exemption provides a regulatory framework for these blends, they are not yet available at retail fuel stations. Implementation will require significant adjustments to both production networks and distribution infrastructure. Furthermore, standard petrol vehicles currently on the road, which are typically designed to handle up to E20 blends, are not compatible with these higher concentrations. Utilizing E22 through E30 will necessitate specific engine and fuel system modifications. This policy development sits alongside other initiatives, including the rollout of E85 and the ongoing evaluation of alternative biofuel pathways, such as isobutanol-diesel blends, as part of a broader strategy to diversify India’s energy mix.
