Honda Motor is adjusting its strategy in India by shifting focus toward gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles and reducing overall expenses following losses in its electric vehicle business. As part of this effort, Honda has partnered with engineering firm Tata Technologies to co-develop vehicles tailored for the Indian market. The agreement aims to reduce development costs by up to 20 percent and shorten vehicle development cycles from five years to roughly two and a half years.

The partnership follows internal debate between Honda’s Japanese management and local Indian executives regarding supplier selection. Japanese management favored maintaining established global suppliers to preserve quality standards, whereas Indian executives advocated for utilizing local suppliers to lower production costs and accelerate development timelines. In response, Honda stated that its operations rely on collaborative discussion across global and regional teams, emphasizing that it aims to address a gap in its current product lineup by delivering vehicles that balance quality with affordability.

Tata Technologies was chosen for its local supply chain connections and expertise in designing vehicles suited to local consumer preferences. Under the arrangement, Honda will maintain control over core technologies, vehicle safety systems, connectivity features, driver-assistance tools, and quality oversight.

2025 Honda Elevate ADV Edition Launched

Honda’s market share in India has decreased from 7.3 percent over a decade ago to 1.3 percent, driven by competition from local automakers offering feature-rich models at competitive price points. In response, the collaboration’s first planned product is a sub-4-meter compact SUV targeted for launch in 2028, a segment in which Honda currently has limited offerings. The company subsequently plans to introduce a mid-size SUV and evaluate further vehicle additions for the Indian market, while exploring options to utilize India as an export hub if cost and quality targets are achieved.
