Speculations of Hyundai launching its micro-SUV in the Indian market has been going on for quite some time now. Fueling these rumours are the latest spy shots that snapped the smallest Korean SUV testing on Indian roads for the very first time. The test mule spotted was heavily disguised although it gave away crucial hints about the proportions and silhouette of the upcoming SUV.
Hyundai’s new micro-SUV, internally known as AX1, will be the answer to the likes of the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and Tata Motors’ upcoming HBX. Maruti has witnessed a decent success with S-Presso as the total sales in the first year has already crossed 75,000 units. Tata Motors has also been able to create a buzz in the market with its HBX concept.
Both these developments along with customers’ shift towards SUV-ish profiles have prompted Hyundai to go ahead with its own Micro SUV project. In terms of dimensions, the new Hyundai SUV is expected to stack between 3.7 meters and 3.8 meters in length. It’ll feature upright styling with typical SUV design cues like a flat bonnet, raised suspension, large glasshouse, and mildly squared wheel arches. Other important design elements such as multi-tier headlamps and large alloy wheels will help the SUV to flaunt its premium appeal.
Based on the K1 Platform, a new Hyundai SUV will share its engine, gearbox, and other hardware settings with Grand i10 Nios. The 1.2-litre petrol engine will be a defacto choice although lower trims of SUV could come equipped with a 1.0-litre engine from Santro. On the transmission front, a 5-speed manual transmission and AMT will be offered to prospective buyers. In terms of competition, the new Hyundai Micro SUV will take on the likes of Maruti S-Presso and the upcoming Tata HBX. In addition, it will also contend against Mahindra KUV1OO and Maruti Suzuki Ignis among others.
