According to a Bloomberg report, the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group is in advanced discussions to acquire a majority stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, Volkswagen AG’s business entity in the country. This is JSW third big move in the auto space after its own brand of vehicles are set to come. Along that, it will invest and work with MG Motor and SAVIPL. If finalized, the transaction would inject fresh capital into the entity, which manages operations for the Skoda, Volkswagen, and Audi brands, alongside luxury and super-luxury marques including Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bentley. Both entities aim to reach an agreement in the coming weeks, though final terms remain under negotiation and a definitive transaction is not yet guaranteed. Volkswagen declined to confirm the talks, stating that it continually evaluates strategic opportunities for the Indian passenger vehicle market.
If completed, the acquisition would represent JSW Group’s second major expansion into the domestic passenger vehicle market, following its purchase of a 35 percent stake in MG Motor India in 2023. In FY2026, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India held a 2.34 percent share of India’s passenger vehicle market according to FADA data, compared to Kia India’s 5.94 percent and JSW MG Motor India’s 1.40 percent. The strategic focus on India reflects Volkswagen’s broader operational shift toward non-European growth markets following its exit from Russia and planned market withdrawal from China.
