Based on the same platform as the MG Comet EV sold in India, the Yep Plus will go on sale in China in March 2024, following the smaller three-door Yep. Baojun extended the three-door Yep’s wheelbase and length to accommodate the rear doors. The Yep Plus has a wheelbase of 2,560mm, is 450mm longer and 600mm longer than the 3.4m long Yep. The overall width and height have also increased to 1,760 mm and 1,726 mm, an increase of 75 mm and 5 mm, respectively, compared to the compact SUV.
Apart from the Defender-style darkened C-pillar, new alloy wheels and the absence of the LCD screen on the tailgate that is available on the three-door, the same Yep and Yep Plus for the design.The boxy EV SUV takes inspiration from the Jimny’s design, from the flat side profile to the small but sharp lights. The headlights have very Porsche-like graphics.
Baojun hasn’t revealed any battery details, but the Yep Plus is a bigger device than the Yep’s 28.1 kWh battery. This is confirmed by the scope it says. The Yep Plus clocked 303km on the CLTC cycle, while the Yep Plus clocked 401km. Power comes from a 102 hp engine mounted on the rear axle and Baojun claims a top speed of 150 km/h.We previously reported that Baojun’s Yep EV SUV and MG Comet EV will be based on the Global Compact Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform, and MG Motor India will mark the design of the Yep in mid-2023. The next version of MG Motor’s compact EV SUV (codenamed E260), which is slated for release in 2025, will likely be a three-door model. A potential competitor to the MG Comet EV-based SUV is the recently launched Tata Punch EV.
Meanwhile, MG Motor’s parent company SAIC Motor has entered into a partnership with JSW Group to expand the British marque’s presence in India. JSW Group owns 35% of the JV, which is said to be working to bring ICE and NEV (four-wheel electric vehicles with a top speed of 32 km/h but less than 40 km/h) to the market.
