The next-generation Tata Nexon is in the works and the model was recently spotted testing for the first time. The Nexon turned out to be a game-changer for Tata Motors, which makes the new generation of the subcompact SUV all the more important. The spy shots reveal a completely camouflaged model possibly with the existing body shell, while the internals being tested could be new.
Expect to see a major design revision and we could see inspiration from the Curvv concept at the front. Tata could also opt for a sharper rear profile while retaining the coupe roofline on the SUV. The taillight on the prototype also looks sleeker with sharp edges pointing at cleaner lines overall.
The cabin is expected to see big upgrades as well. The next iteration will most likely benefit from the new and larger infotainment screen and digital console showcased on the updated Safari, Harrier and Altroz Racer models at the Auto Expo 2023. This will also bring features like a 360-degree camera to the SUV. We also expect to see an updated version of iRA-connected car technology and more.
There will be powertrain upgrades as well with the revised turbo petrol and diesel engine options on the new-gen Nexon. Let’s not forget, the upgrades will extend to the Nexon EV as well. So a more range, better performance and features are likely in the future.
It will be interesting to see what platform Tata opts for with the new Nexon. It’s currently based on the X2 platform that traces its origins to the Indica but could shift to the ALFA architecture that underpins the Punch and Altroz. It was always developed keeping electrification in mind, which would make switching to this platform easier on the production level as well as parts sharing.
The subcompact SUV segment is still lucrative and very promising in volume. It’s also quite crowded with the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV300, and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Speculations also suggest at Volkswagen and Skoda working on a new subcompact SUV for emerging markets, which will be the brand’s next big launch in India. However, that model is still a while away.
The new Nexon could arrive by end of 2024 or in 2025. Tata will also have the Curvv ICE production by late 2024.
