The Volkswagen Group is doubling down on its premium localized strategy in India. Following Volkswagen’s shift to assemble the new 7-seater Tayron via the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) route at its Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) plant, mechanical sibling Skoda Kodiaq likely to follow the same localized assembly path.
Both models sit on the modernized MQB Evo platform. While importing fully built vehicles (CBUs) offers a quicker path to market, CKD operations allow the group to circumvent heavy import duties, maintaining competitive pricing in the ₹35 lakh to ₹50 lakh tier.
Preparing for localized assembly is an intricate, multi-step process.
Local assembly allows both brands to offer tailored equipment packages without runaway costs. Underneath, both SUVs share the group’s 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. However, their personalities remain distinctly separated:
VW Tayron: Replaces the former Tiguan Allspace with a tech-heavy focus, featuring a massive 15-inch infotainment system, striking LED light bars, and aggressive R-Line styling.
Skoda Kodiaq: Leans into classic European luxury, emphasizing cabin comfort, tactile “Smart Dials,” and versatile seating configurations.
By running local assembly for both the Tayron and Kodiaq, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India unlocks shared manufacturing synergies. This dual-pronged CKD approach gives the group a distinct edge, offering two distinct three-row flagship options to tackle rivals in the Indian market. With diesel already on the chart, Kodiaq coming back in a diesel avatar could restart the engines of this segment and SAVIPL in India!
