Tata Motors Gains Second Spot – Hyundai Down To Fourth

Tata Motors has made a significant leap in the automotive market, becoming the second largest car manufacturer by sales in September, edging past Mahindra, which now holds third place. According to the latest Vahan registration data, Tata’s sales reached 40,068 units, while Mahindra sold 37,451 units. Maruti Suzuki continues to lead the pack with a whopping 1,22,785 units sold. Hyundai India, despite selling record number of Creta now falls to fourth position. It was late 2024 and 2025 has been the time when the South Korean company has lost its long held position.

In terms of domestic wholesales, Tata Motors achieved a record high of 59,667 units for September 2025. The electric vehicle (EV) segment also saw impressive growth, with sales soaring by 96% year-over-year to 9,191 units. Additionally, CNG vehicle sales hit an all-time high, exceeding 17,800 units. Following a recent GST rate cut, new bookings for Tata vehicles doubled in the second half of the month.

The Nexon achieved remarkable success, selling over 22,500 units in a single month, marking the highest sales ever for a Tata passenger vehicle. In the second quarter of FY2025, Tata delivered 1,44,397 vehicles, reflecting a growth of more than 10% compared to the previous year. Notably, EVs accounted for a record 17% of overall sales, with quarterly EV sales jumping 59% year-over-year, approaching 25,000 units. Tata is set to go even further with premium car push from 2026 onwards as it prepares a massive new portfolio of cars and SUV’s.
