The Lexus ES has been a car that has been loved and appreciated immensely by critics and people alike. However, it appeal is limited and hence the numbers never go high enough like rivals from the likes of the German trio. The Lexus ES has been heavily updated in 2018 and ever since all the updates have been minimalist but significant in a few areas. The ES numbers in the last two years are rising and clearly out do some rivals in the luxury and semi-luxury space. What has changed in this variant, we find out.

The ES gets a bit of changes on the outside. The front grille and it’s appliquéing inside the borders of the grill are changed. There are subtle changes to tail-lamps are on offer making it look futuristic. The side profile is perfect, with a long wheelbase, sharp lines. Mixing elegance with brute force is always a Lexus character, intact with the ES.

The new and larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, replacing the previous non-touch version, is a welcome move. True to the Lexus brand, the interior is a blend of sophistication and durability, with high-quality materials throughout. From the premium feel of the leather inserts on the dashboard and door panels, it’s clear that every detail is designed to create a lasting impression.

The rear seat have full control of the infotainment with sun blinds on glasses including the rear screen. Enough charging points and a big armrest and a/c controls to make things comfortable, luxurious. Needless to say the seats are comfortable in every regard at the back. There is a boss mode to move the passenger seat to the front for the full relaxation. The sound system as is always truly special. The sunroof is small but it has an HUD and the seats have well done ventilation. The revised instrument cluster is welcome, with new dials.

What sets the ES apart from others in its class is its impressive hybrid powertrain. It combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a smoothest driving experience in its class. The petrol engine generates 176bhp and 221Nm of torque, while the electric motor alone produces about 118bhp and 202Nm. While its total output may not compete with bigger sedans like the 530i, the ES300h stands out with its efficient range-extended hybrid system. The transition from the petrol engine to electric mode is seamless, often leaving drivers unaware of when the petrol engine kicks in or when they are running solely on electric power. Refinement is superior, driveability is excellent and performance is good enough in true Japanese way, linear and understated. All this only possible because of well tuned CVT gearbox which works very well in our Indian conditions.

The ES prioritizes passenger comfort entirely. Navigating through rough road conditions, it effortlessly glides over bumps without transferring vibrations to the cabin. Equipped with 18-inch wheels with Bridgestone tyres on 235/45 tyres, the ES handles varying city road surfaces with ease and comfort. Although it boasts a softer suspension setup, it maintains good control over vertical movements, ensuring a smooth ride even at higher speeds. However, there is a bit of vertical movement at higher speeds. The ES, being a low-slung vehicle, care is advised when approaching large speed bumps and pothole-laden roads.

It may not be the most thrilling option for those who are frequently behind the wheel, and its support network pales in comparison to its competitors. However, the Lexus ES350h stands as a worthwhile ‘investment’ for anyone seeking not just a remarkable piece of engineering but also stunning aesthetics from every angle. The ES is growing slowly and steadily because of its green creditionals and rare market presence. This smartly designed vehicle compensates for its limited market presence with a well-rounded package that’s hard to overlook.
