Volkswagen recently unveiled the exterior design of its new Tukan pickup truck at the 71st Festa do Peão de Boiadeiro in Barretos, Brazil. Scheduled for release in the Brazilian market in the first half of 2027, the vehicle will be manufactured in São José dos Pinhais. The Tukan’s introduction is a key component of Volkswagen’s R$ 20 billion investment strategy to launch 21 new models across South America by 2028. This new model expands the brand’s historical lineup of utility vehicles in the region, which includes the Kombi Pick-up, Saveiro, and Amarok.

The vehicle will be available in two primary configurations. The entry-level Single Cab, known as the Robust version, is designed specifically for professional and agricultural use; it features a shorter cab, a longer cargo bed, and simplified exterior components for easier maintenance. The Double Cab, introduced in the top-tier Extreme trim with a “Canary Yellow” paint option, is geared toward mixed use. While the Tukan utilizes the underlying architecture of the T-Cross passenger vehicle, it features a distinct exterior design characterized by a unique front fascia, elevated LED headlights, and pronounced wheel arches to suit its utility profile.

Engineering the Tukan involved adapting Volkswagen’s MQB platform for a pickup truck for the first time. To accommodate the cargo bed while preserving interior cabin space, the vehicle’s wheelbase was extended. Additionally, a specialized leaf spring rear suspension was integrated to support heavy payloads without compromising stability. Throughout its development, the platform underwent over 2 million kilometers of testing. Direct feedback from users during these field trials led to concrete engineering adjustments, including an upgraded air intake system designed to handle heavy dust and an improved climate control system for increased cooling capacity.
