Volvo Cars is rolling out its most extensive over-the-air software update to date, introducing a comprehensive user experience upgrade to approximately 2.5 million vehicles across 85 countries. Starting this week, the new “Volvo Car UX” will be delivered free of charge to customers driving models equipped with Google built-in, including eligible vehicles produced as far back as 2020. This historic update leverages years of technological development to provide a faster, more intuitive, and highly streamlined interface, directly addressing customer feedback by significantly reducing the number of screen taps required to access core functions.
Built on the Android Automotive operating system, the refreshed layout brings a modern and consistent design philosophy to the entire Volvo lineup. This ensures that drivers of older models, such as a three-year-old XC40, can enjoy the exact same contemporary interface as owners of the latest EX90. The most substantial change is the reorganization of the central display, which now prominently features essential apps like navigation, media, and phone controls directly on the home screen. This allows users to seamlessly manage secondary tasks, such as skipping a song, without ever losing sight of their navigation directions.

Further enhancing the driving experience, the update introduces a dynamic contextual bar that automatically adapts to the current driving situation—for instance, by displaying exterior camera views when maneuvering at low speeds. For plug-in hybrid owners, optimizing their electric powertrain is now simpler than ever, with a one-tap ‘Pure’ drive mode readily accessible from the home screen. Additionally, the software rollout allows eligible drivers to seamlessly purchase and download Volvo’s Pilot Assist system directly to their vehicles, while also laying the critical groundwork for an advanced conversational AI experience powered by Google Gemini, which is slated to arrive later this spring.
