Maruti Suzuki Baleno Facelift Diesel Engine Will Be An All New 1.5 Motor and will most likely make much more power and torque than the 75 PS and 90 PS tune on offer

Suzuki’s Fiat sourced 1.3 litre diesel engine is too old now and honestly, a bit underpowered. Its after a lot of consideration and market study that Maruti Suzuki India decided to introduce this engine. This new engine is a bigger turbocharged 1.5 litre diesel unit. The emission norms and other aspects is forcing Maruti to change the engine.

The current iteration of the Baleno uses the ubiquitous 1.3 litre diesel engine as we stated earlier. This is paired with a fixed geometry turbocharger and produces 74 bhp and 190 Nm of torque. The new engine is built in house and will be powerful than the 1.3 litre diesel. The exact numbers though are still unknown. The 1.5 litre unit will be tuned to offer more drivability and will likely offer good torque throughout the rev-band. A major issue with the 1.3 litre was its turbo lag and NVH levels. Expect Suzuki to iron out these issues in the newer engine.

There are high stakes that the new engine will make its debut in the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Ciaz facelift. Another contender is the yet to launch, updated Ertiga which too will benefit from this engine. And no we haven’t forgotten the Baleno. The Baleno will also be launched in an updated avatar in 2019, which again will feature this engine.

After the engine makes its appearance in the Baleno Facelift, it’s no surprise that Maruti Suzuki India will replace the older 1.3 litre unit with this one in their remaining cars. Along with a diesel motor the Baleno also comes with a choice of petrol engines. A naturally aspirated 1.2 litre K series petrol motor that churns out 82 bhp and 113 Nm of torque and a hotter RS series engine with 101 bhp of power and 150 Nm of torque. What this engine brings to the table will be a question that’ll keep us busy until we finally get our hands on it.
