While the BMW F 450 GS and BMW F 450 R share the same core technical foundation—including the 420 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine producing 35 kW (48 hp) at 8,750 rpm and 43 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm—they are engineered for distinctly different riding purposes. The F 450 GS is an off-road-capable adventure tourer designed for dual-sport versatile riding, whereas the F 450 R is a dedicated road-focused naked bike designed for urban maneuverability and street performance.

In terms of dimensions and physical footprint, the F 450 GS features a longer, wider, and taller chassis. The GS measures 2,161 mm in overall length, 869 mm in width across the handlebars, and carries a longer wheelbase of 1,465 mm to ensure high-speed stability on mixed terrain. In contrast, the F 450 R is more compact and aggressive, measuring 2,002 mm in overall length, 825 mm in width, and utilizing a tighter 1,405 mm wheelbase for sharp, agile turn-in behavior on asphalt.

Ergonomics and seating parameters highlight major functional differences between the two models. The off-road-oriented F 450 GS comes with a significantly higher standard seat height of 845 mm (adjustable down to 830 mm or up to 865 mm) and long-travel suspension providing 220 mm of ground clearance to negotiate trails. The F 450 R features a lower standard two-piece seat height of 790 mm (customizable between 775 mm and 810 mm via factory accessory seats), allowing for an easier reach to the ground and a sporty, front-biased riding stance.

Wheels, tires, and suspension configurations are customized to match each bike’s intended riding environment. The F 450 GS uses an adventure-style setup with a larger 19-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel (available with spoked rims for off-roading) paired with dual-purpose tires. The F 450 R rides exclusively on 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels fitted with tubeless street tires (110/70-17 front and 150/60-17 rear) and street-tuned suspension valving for firm cornering stability.

Both models share similar core electronic suites, the 14-liter fuel tank capacity, and the option for the Easy Ride Clutch (ERC). However, their electronic profiles differ slightly; the GS includes off-road specific software such as “Enduro” and “Enduro Pro” riding modes, whereas the F 450 R features street and track software including “Dynamic Pro” mode, sport display layouts with lean angle telemetry, and a reversible shift pattern for occasional track use. Finally, the road-oriented bodywork and naked bike design give the base F 450 R a ready-to-ride weight of 175 kg, making it roughly 3 kg lighter than the F 450 GS, which weighs 178 kg due to its additional adventure bodywork and structural components.
