Although the star attraction of Skoda’s stall at the ongoing 2020 Auto Expo is its Vision IN premium crossover concept, new BS6 Skoda Rapid TSi Matte is also grabbing the eyeballs of the auto enthusiasts at the event. Undoubtedly, Rapid is an important product for the company in India and this explains Skoda’s preparations to launch the BS6 version of the mid-size sedan in India very soon.
As the name explains, Rapid Matte comes with a matte paint scheme that looks understated yet elegant. The color scheme is contrasted by red-painted outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs), rub-strips, and accents on the boot lid. Further, the sporty appeal of the sedan is enhanced by black alloy wheels and white trim. Just like the Monte Carlo edition of the Rapid, we could probably see Rapid Matte coming to market with a badge of a special edition.
Under the hood, the BS6 Skoda Rapid TSi will receive a 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine compliant with the upcoming BS6 emission norms. The motor is capable of putting out 115 bhp and 200 Nm and transmission duties will be handled by a 6-speed manual gearbox. You can also opt for a 7-speed DSG though prices for this variant are expected to be on the higher side. Importantly, Skoda will not upgrade its current set of motors, i.e., a 1.6-liter MPI petrol engine and a 1.5-liter TDI diesel engine to BS6 which essentially means these motors will not be produced beyond April 1, 2020.
There won’t be any major noticeable difference in the external and internal design of Rapid. The sedan has already carved a place for itself in the Indian market owing to its sporty handling and high-quality interiors. Once launched, new BS6 Skoda Rapid TSi will continue to take on the likes of Honda City, Volkswagen Vento, Hyundai Verna, and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz among others.
