Bajaj Auto forayed in the electric vehicle segment with the Chetak and the company aimed to make the iconic name into a sub-brand of its own. While sales and availability of the Chetak has been a hit and miss affair in the midst of the pandemic, the company is still looking to expand the Chetak family and a second version is said to be in the works. Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, Bajaj Auto, recently confirmed the development while speaking to a news outlet. He also confirmed that the model will be introduced in FY2023 itself.
The Bajaj Chetak was introduced in January 2020 and had it not been for the pandemic, we would’ve seen the model and sales expand faster. But it’s taken a little over two years for the Chetak’s sales to reach a certain potential. The hardware was also updated for MY2022, improving performance by a marginal amount.
It’s a good time for Bajaj to go ahead and bring a new version. There’s no word on what will make the second version different from the current. Bigger battery? More features? Better performance? Cosmetic changes? We’ll have to wait to see what Bajaj has in store. We do hope the company retains the salient bits like the metal body, illuminated switchgear, strong build quality and peppy performance from the current Chetak.
As for now, we know the Chetak will soon get a sibling in the next 12 months. And it will also be sold via the Pro-biking outlets.
