Starting 30 April 2026, Google Gemini began rolling out to Polestar and Volvo vehicles as a software-based upgrade to the existing Google Assistant. This integration is initially available to customers in the United States using Google accounts set to US English, with plans for additional languages and regions to follow. The transition shifts the in-car interface from a standard command-based structure to a conversational AI model capable of multi-turn dialogue and contextual understanding. Drivers can interact with the system using natural language for complex tasks, such as finding specific stops along a route or managing communications without needing to restart queries or memorize specific phrasing.

The update introduces several specific functional tools, including Gemini Live, which allows for hands-free brainstorming and general inquiries. In terms of navigation and messaging, the system can interpret detailed intent, such as identifying highly rated stops with specific parking requirements or summarizing incoming texts. A new translation feature has also been integrated, allowing drivers to dictate messages in one language and have them translated into another before sending. Media playback can also be controlled through more specific, mood-based natural language requests rather than rigid commands.

Eligibility for this update covers most modern vehicles from both manufacturers. For Polestar, the upgrade is available for all models except the Polestar 1. For Volvo, the rollout includes a wide range of models with Google built-in dating back to 2020, specifically the C40, EC40, EX40, XC40, S60, V60, V60CC, XC60, V90, V90CC, S90, XC90, EX90, ES90, EX30, and EX60. The update is delivered over-the-air and requires an active internet connection but no additional hardware. Users are prompted to opt in or decline the service via a pop-up on the vehicle’s center display.
