Bajaj Auto has filed a trademark for the ‘Darkstar’ moniker and received the same in September this year. The Darkstar name does not have roots in Bajaj’s history but it could be the start of something new for the Chakan-based manufacturer. Speculations suggest that the Bajaj Darkstar could be the name of an upcoming adventure motorcycle, a first for the brand amidst its range of premium commuters and entry-level sports motorcycles. However, the a higher chance of it being a limited edition for existing motorcycles too.
There’s no official word on what the Darkstar might be, nor have any test mules emerged to give us an idea about what the product will turn out to be. It’s possible that Bajaj would want to explore a new ADV based on the new-generation Pulsar 250 platform. The new chassis has been designed to be versatile and will underpin all Pulsar models in the future, replacing the existing lineup. Bajaj is known to be efficient with its platforms and what better way to do it than add a new model that opens up a new segment for the company?
It’s not uncommon for manufacturers to explore different body styles using the same platform. Suzuki India did it with the new V-Strom 250 SX, while Honda has done it with the Hornet and CB200X. The BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS also share the same underpinnings.
We reckon the upcoming Bajaj Darkstar could be a V-Strom-like model powered by a 250cc single-cylinder motor from the Pulsar N250 & F250. This will help the company establish economies of scale, while a long travel suspension, revised gear ratios and new design language could be one of the many changes. Expect to see dual-purpose tyres with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels. The option of wire-spoked wheels would be surprising.
