The long-wheelbase versions are extremely popular in India. We have a number of examples where the companies have ventured with long-wheelbase versions of their standard models and recorded massive customer turnouts. Some of such prominent examples include BMW 7-Series, Mercedes S-Class, and Audi A8. Even below the top of the luxury line, offering such as Mercedes E-class and Skoda Superb (both of which is based on long-wheelbase version) are selling like the hotcakes. Given the chauffeur-driven target market segment, the importance of enhanced rear legroom for buyers can be easily understood.
The new model will come with a 110 mm longer wheelbase than the standard 3 series model. In addition to the wheelbase, BMW has substantially invested in the rear seat of the car – you will get enhanced support and extra bolstering in the long-wheelbase version. Even the rear armrest has been made wider which along with features such as a panoramic sunroof and mood lighting will further help to enhance its appeal.
BMW 3 Series long-wheelbase will come powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine capable of putting out 258 bhp. The company is also expected to plonk a diesel engine under the hood with a max output of 190 bhp. It will be interesting to witness whether BMW will make substantial changes in the appearance of the upcoming long-wheelbase version to differentiate it significantly from the regular 3-series model. This could happen via different colour options specific to BMW 3-Series LWB India version and interior trims as well. The prices of the upcoming model are expected to be in the range of Rs 48 lakh to Rs 52 lakh inching near the 5-Series, which is ready to come as a facelift in late 2021 as well. Currently, the best leg space in the back of any entry-level sedan from European premium carmakers is the Volvo S60 which is set for launch in March 2021.
