Honda Motor Company is set to make a bold return to the Indian passenger vehicle market with an ambitious plan to launch at least 10 new models by 2030.

In a notable strategic shift, the Japanese automaker is focusing heavily on the rapidly growing SUV segment, planning to introduce seven new SUVs designed to compete more effectively with brands like Suzuki, Toyota, and Hyundai.

The urgency behind this decision arises from Honda’s current limited offerings, which mainly include the Elevate mid-size SUV alongside the City and Amaze sedans. This narrow portfolio has resulted in a substantial loss of market share, particularly as Honda’s traditional dominance in sedans declines and the Elevate faces tough competition from segment leaders such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Therefore, launching new models is crucial for Honda to regain its standing in the market.

During the recent Japan Mobility Show, Honda President and CEO Toshihiro Mibe declared, “We are coming up with a very aggressive model launch plan. We are planning to launch 10 or more models by 2030… And then for the SUVs, which have become mainstream in India, our plan is for seven models by 2030.”

Management has identified India as a priority market, establishing a dedicated project team to formulate a comprehensive strategy tailored to the country’s dynamics.

Of the seven forthcoming SUVs, some will be global models while others will be uniquely crafted to cater to the specific tastes of Indian consumers.

One major highlight is the anticipated launch of the 0 Series SUV in India in 2026. This vehicle, recently showcased at the Japan Motor Show, will utilize key components from the Elevate but will feature updated architecture and a design ready for advanced software integration.

Honda’s management has confirmed this production strategy: “Because it is going to be an SUV, we will make maximum use of Elevate components and combine them with the Zero Series concept to create a completely new product.”

Importantly, the 0 Series SUV will be manufactured in India for both domestic sales and export to Japan and other Asian markets, marking India’s rise as a global manufacturing and design hub for Honda.

The management also noted that the fast-evolving market landscape and the increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers are crucial factors behind this swift and expansive product response.
