Tata Motors emerged as India’s second-best-selling carmaker in March 2025, surpassing both Mahindra and Hyundai. After spending the previous seven months in either third or fourth place, Tata sold 48,462 cars last month, effectively reclaiming the second position in the retail sales rankings.

In March, Tata’s sales saw a year-on-year increase of 5 percent. However, the company did experience a slight dip in market share, which fell by 0.3 percent to 13.8 percent.

Mahindra secured the third spot with 46,297 units sold and a market share of 13.20 percent, reflecting a 17 percent growth alongside a 1.17 percent increase in market share year-on-year. Hyundai followed in fourth place with sales of 42,511 cars, a decline of 5 percent, causing its market share to drop from 13.50 percent to 12.13 percent.

Hyundai’s reign in the second spot, which had been consistent for years, has come to an end. In February 2025, Mahindra overtook Hyundai to claim second place, only for Tata to take the lead in March.
Kia India reported 23,623 units sold in the domestic market, registering a healthy 18.3% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth over 19,968 units sold in April 2024. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) recorded a growth of 33% in April 2025 over the same period last year, selling 27,324 units. In April 2025, Toyota’s domestic sales stood at 24,833 units, while exports contributed 2,491 units. In April 2024, TKM had sold 20,494 units.

While the exact factors behind these shifts remain uncertain, Mahindra’s successful SUV line-up, including popular models like the Scorpio N, Bolero, Thar, and the XUV700, along with Tata’s robust electric vehicle offerings, likely played a significant role. Interestingly, despite the launch of the Creta Electric in January, Hyundai failed to maintain its foothold in the sales rankings in the months that followed. The overall domestic car market recorded total retail sales of 350,603 units in March 2025, marking a year-on-year growth of 6.27 percent.
