A fully camouflaged test mule of the Tata Altroz has been observed undergoing real-world road trials around Pune. Inside the vehicle, the steering wheel was fitted with a sticker labeled “CNG Only,” leading to speculation regarding potential changes to the model’s powertrain lineup. Tata Motors currently offers a naturally aspirated petrol i-CNG option for the Altroz, which delivers 72 bhp and 103 Nm of torque. Given the recent introduction of a turbocharged CNG configuration in the Nexon—which generates 99 bhp and 170 Nm—there is a possibility that the manufacturer may be preparing to bring a similar turbo-petrol CNG setup to the Altroz segment.

The appearance of this new test variant comes amid shifting market dynamics for the premium hatchback. Recent industry data shows declining sales volumes for the Altroz, with figures dropping to just under 3,000 units, positioning it outside the top ten best-selling hatchbacks. Furthermore, the model remains the only passenger vehicle in Tata’s current lineup without a confirmed electric variant timeline, though it continues to be available with naturally aspirated petrol, factory-fitted CNG, and diesel engine options. The addition of a turbocharged powertrain, whether in standard petrol or a dual-fuel CNG format, would introduce a higher-performance option to compete more directly with other performance-oriented premium hatchbacks in the market.
