2019 Maruti Suzuki Alto Crossover is squarely aimed at the Kwid as it has taken a good amount of market share from the brand

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, India’s leading auto maker is giving their very popular small hatchback Alto a very fresh look and crossover like styling, codenamed Y1K which will be having a crossover like shape to take on its direct rival the Kwid.

Maruti Alto used to be the leader of the small car segment until its competition arrived. Alto is now under pressure from its French rival the Renault Kwid and has already lost around 8 per cent of the market share of the Alto. The mini crossover like looking hatch is doing quite good in the Indian market and had managed to drop the sales of Alto with its better styling and aggressive pricing.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is not hanging off and and started designing the next gen Alto. The new car is expected to launch by the festive season of 2019. The new car is expected to sport masculine and vigorous SUV-ish inspired exterior looks and will be high on space and features. The entry level hatchback will be based on an all new platform that will meet the new norms.

The new Maruti Suzuki Alto will get its hardware and technology from the parent company Suzuki. However the designing, engineering and authorization will be done done locally by the Indian branch keeping in minds the regional inputs. Maruti is considering a mild hybrid petrol engine for the new gen Alto which will take help in improving the fuel efficiency and taking it to another level.

Currently Maruti is sitting at a market share of close to 50%, and is planning to improve the market share with launching new products in India within the next three years, which will help them creating a stronger hatchback portfolio. The company also will be revitalizing the out going models like WagonR, facelifted Celerio and the new-gen Swift.
